Halloween — October 31

Halloween is a holiday in both Britain and the United States. In Britain it is celebrated in Scotland and Wales. In the United States many towns and villages celebrate it. It is a holiday for children and young people.
On the evening of October 31, boys and girls put on old clothes and masks. The night is usually dark, so they take a lantern made from a pumpkin. They cut holes in the pumpkin for two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Then they put a candle inside. The pumpkin looks like a scary or funny face with glowing eyes.
The children go from house to house and knock on the doors. They call, “Trick or treat!” This means that they will not play tricks on the people if they get a treat. The people give the children sweets, fruit, cakes, or other small gifts. The children put them in their bags and are happy.
