An English Village

A few days ago Sasha’s mother came home. She came home later than usual. She said to Sasha, "I am sorry. I was too late to give you dinner. But I have something interesting for you. It is in my bag."

Sasha said, "I have had my dinner already. There is always something in the kitchen... What have you brought?"

His mother said, "A book."

Sasha asked, "What kind of book?"

She answered, "A book about England. I got it in a book lottery. When I opened the book to read something, the page was about an English village."

Sasha said, "About a village?"

His mother said, "Yes. An English village is an interesting place. The shop is the center of village life. Women and children like to go there. Men meet at the pub. They speak about this or that. There is talk about the weather. There is talk about the harvest. There is talk about football. There is talk about village news."

Sasha asked, "Is there a cinema or a club in that village?"

His mother answered, "No. The people of the village go to the nearest town. They go by bus. They go when they want to see a new film. They go when they want to get something. They get something which they cannot get in the village shop."

Sasha asked, "What about a school? Do they have a school?"

His mother said, "The village school is a small old building. When the pupils are eleven years old, they go to secondary schools. They go to schools in the nearest town. A school bus takes them every morning. The bus brings them back in the afternoon."

Sasha asked, "Are there any other interesting things about the village?"

His mother said, "Oh, you must read the book yourself!"
