Glasgow

Glasgow is the third largest city in Great Britain. It lies on the River Clyde in Scotland. Glasgow is a very old and beautiful city. The University of Glasgow was founded in 1450, and it is one of the oldest universities in the country. The famous English writer Daniel Defoe once said that Glasgow was the cleanest and most beautiful city in Great Britain.
James Watt, a great engineer, studied at Glasgow University. Later he became famous for inventing and improving the steam engine. Because Scotland is rich in coal and iron, Glasgow grew into a large industrial city. There are big engineering plants and textile factories in Glasgow. Ships that are built in the shipyards of Glasgow sail in many seas and oceans. The port of Glasgow is one of the most important ports in Britain.
Glasgow University is also a center of culture in the city. People from many different countries visit the old university. They can see the examination halls, the library, and the museum with many old books and pictures.
The center of Glasgow is called George Square. In the middle of it there is a monument to Walter Scott — a great Scottish writer. There are also many parks and beautiful squares in Glasgow where people like to walk and rest.
