How to Choose a Good Worker

Mr. Briggs and his wife lived in a house with a lovely fruit garden. They loved their garden very much.
One day, Mr. Briggs said to his wife, "It is spring now. There is a lot of work in the garden, but I do not have enough time. I need to hire a man to help me."
"Yes," said his wife. "You must find a good worker for the garden. Last spring, the man who worked here liked to sit under the apple trees. Do you remember him?"
"Yes, I remember him, but now I know better how to choose a worker," said Mr. Briggs.
The next day, when Mr. Briggs and his wife were in the garden, two men came. They were garden workers.
Mr. Briggs spoke to them and said to one man, "I think you will be a good worker. You can come tomorrow and start working."
The men left the garden.
"Why did you choose that man?" asked his wife. "I like the other man more. He has a nice face."
"My dear," said Mr. Briggs, "I like his face too, but to choose a good worker, we must look at his trousers. The man with the nice face has clean knees. The other man has dirty knees, so I know he works hard in the garden."
