Alan Marshall was born in 1902 in Australia. His family was poor, and his father was a farmer.

When Alan was six years old, he became very ill and could not walk. Later he learned to walk with crutches. Every day he went to the fields and walked for many hours. Alan also learned to swim and to ride horses. He loved horses and dogs very much. He liked trees, flowers and nature. He wanted to tell people about all these things, so he began to write stories.

After school Alan wanted to see his country. He travelled around Australia and saw many different places. He met many people and learned a lot about his country. In his stories he wrote about the people he met and the places he saw. He also wrote many good stories about children.

During the Second World War, Alan Marshall worked as a journalist. He wrote about the war for newspapers.
