All Fools' Day

English schoolchildren like the 1st of April. On this day people play jokes on their friends. It is called April Fools’ Day. It is also called All Fools’ Day.

If you do not know much about this day, we can tell you something. We can describe some of the jokes. We can explain this day.

Many years ago the 25th of March was New Year’s Day. And the 1st of April was the last day. It was the last day of the New Year celebrations. People had fun on that day.

As the weather changed often during the day in that season, it “fooled” people. The weather was not the same. So people began to play jokes. They began to fool their friends too. It became a tradition.

There are many April Fools’ Day jokes. One of them is to tell a friend that there is chalk on his nose. You say this when his face is clean. It is a funny joke.

Then a boy or a girl may tell a deskmate something. They may say that there is an article in the wall newspaper about him. The boy will go to read the article. But he will not find it there. And he will be an “April Fool”. People will laugh.

We also play jokes on the 1st of April. Usually people are not angry. They are not angry when you play jokes on them on April Fools’ Day. But you must know that some jokes may not be very good. They may be bad. Don’t repeat them. Always choose a good joke to play on your friends. An April Fool is a “fool” on the 1st of April only! It is only for one day.
