David Livingstone (1813-1873)

Many people in the English-speaking world explored new lands. These travelers are famous now, and we can see their names on maps when we learn geography. David Livingstone was one of the first explorers in Africa.
He was born in Scotland. His father was not rich. After a year or two in the village school, David worked in a factory. He started work at six in the morning and finished at eight in the evening.
David had little money, but he bought some school books and studied every night.
When he was nineteen, he went to university to become a doctor.
In 1840 Livingstone went to Africa. He started to explore new lands and decided to help people as a doctor.
Livingstone made three big journeys. He crossed Africa from west to east. He explored rivers, lakes, and large areas of land. African people helped him, and they were friendly.
Livingstone wrote about everything he saw. He put many places on maps. His books have a lot of useful information about Africa.
