Thomas Hardy was the son of an architect and trained as an architect himself. Later, he gave up this profession and became a writer. It is interesting that after his first novel was rejected for “not having enough plot”, Hardy burnt the manuscript. Perhaps it was a real loss for English literature.

Hardy was born and grew up in the countryside, and his best stories and novels give a realistic picture of village life and its changes. He described the difficulties and tragedies in the lives of ordinary people, such as farmers, school teachers, and small tradesmen. His novels are often pessimistic; the characters are shown as helpless against fate.

Hardy was a great master of creating atmosphere. Few writers could use scenery and surroundings so well to suit the story. His prose has a strong rhythm and great power.

His best novels, such as “Tess of the d'Urbervilles” and “Jude the Obscure”, show deep sympathy for poor people. At the same time, Hardy points out the selfishness of the rich and the unfairness of society.

Thomas Hardy was not only one of the best English novelists, but also a good poet. Many later writers admired him and considered him one of the greatest English writers.
