The Conqueror and Tea

Timur, known in history as Tamerlane (1336–1405), was a famous conqueror who ruled over a large part of Central Asia, the Middle East, and India.
It is said that Timur ordered his soldiers to drink only boiled water. Historians are not sure if this story is true. Some believe it is a legend. But boiling water is safe to drink and kills germs. So Timur might have done this to keep his army healthy.
According to the story, Timur tried to make boiled water taste better by adding tea leaves. This tale is often told as the beginning of the tea-drinking tradition in the countries he conquered, such as parts of Central Asia, India, and later Russia. However, tea had already been known in China long before Timur's time.
Even if the story about Timur and tea is more legend than fact, it shows how people have always tried to improve their health and enjoy new drinks. Tea later became very popular in many countries, and today millions of people drink it every day.
