Joseph Turner was the son of a barber. He showed his first picture when he was only fifteen years old, which was an unusual achievement for someone so young.

Turner loved nature very much. He often went on long trips alone through England and Wales, carrying his belongings in a bundle on a stick. During these trips, he carefully observed the landscapes, the forests, rivers, and mountains, gathering material for his paintings and drawings. He especially liked to draw old ruined abbeys and castles, imagining the stories that might have happened there.

Turner became famous for the beautiful colors in his paintings. Most of his works were landscapes—pictures of the countryside—and also scenes of the sea. He could show the changing light of day, the movement of clouds, and the sparkling waves of the ocean in a very realistic and emotional way. His use of light and brilliant coloring created a strong, striking effect that amazed viewers.

Turner was also a master of watercolors, which allowed him to show delicate details and soft shades. People admired not only the beauty of his paintings but also the way he expressed emotions through nature. Today, his works are displayed in the greatest museums in the world, and he is remembered as one of the most important painters in history.
