A Mule is a Member of a Republican Committee

Many American voters do not see much difference between the two main political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Because of this, they often do not care very much for whom they vote. Sometimes people vote without thinking carefully about the candidates or the parties. They may choose the candidate who seems most familiar or popular, even if they do not know much about him.
In 1938, an unusual and funny event happened in the town of Milton. The Democratic mayor of the town wanted to play a joke on his political opponents. He decided to sponsor the candidature of a mule named Boston Curtis. Yes, a real mule!
To everyone's surprise, Boston Curtis was actually elected as the Republican committee-man from Milton. The people who voted probably did not know it was a mule, or they just wanted to make fun of the election. This story became famous in America and is still told today as an example of how strange elections can sometimes be.
This story shows that sometimes people do not think carefully when they vote. It also shows that humor can be a part of politics, and strange events can happen even in serious matters like elections.
