The War for Independence

The war lasted for eight years, from 1775 to 1783. It was a war between Britain and its colonies in North America, which wanted to be free. George Washington was the commander-in-chief of the North American army, and he worked hard for the victory of the colonists.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and some other people. It was adopted on July 4. That is why July 4 is a national holiday in the United States. It is called Independence Day and is considered the birthday of the American nation.

After the War for Independence ended in 1783, sixteen states were formed. They chose George Washington as their first President.
