Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

Abraham Lincoln was born on a farm. His father was poor, so the boy had to work hard every day. Young Abe went to school for less than a year, but he loved reading. “The things I want to know are in books,” he said.
One day, Abraham found a book about the laws of England. He studied it every day, and soon he became very interested in law. Later, he became a lawyer. He liked helping people and used the law to protect them.
Lincoln became very popular, and in 1860 he was elected President of the United States of America.
At that time, the country was divided. A terrible war began, and one side won.
In 1864, Lincoln was elected President again. But in 1865, he was killed in a theater in Washington, D.C.
Today, Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of the greatest presidents of the United States. He worked for peace, freedom, and equality for all people.
