London Bridge

London Bridge is a very old bridge in London. It is about two thousand years old. The first bridge was made of wood. Later, people built a new bridge of stone and called it London Bridge.

There were small houses and shops on the old bridge. People had to pay money when they crossed the bridge. Many people walked and worked there every day.

In 1831, people built another new bridge in the same place. But the city of London grew very fast. Soon, the bridge was too small. In 1960, the people of London wanted to have a larger and stronger bridge.

One very rich man from America bought the old London Bridge. He wanted to take it to America and show it to people there. The people of London were sad, because they loved their old bridge. But they needed money to build the new one.

The American took the old bridge to Arizona, in the USA. Workers built it again there. But there was no river under it. Now, there is only a street under the bridge. People walk along the street and look at the old bridge.

In 1973, a new London Bridge was opened over the River Thames. It is big and strong, and many cars and buses go over it every day.
