It is morning. Polly is sitting under a big pine tree in the garden. Jimmy is lying beside her.

"Carrot," Polly says, "do you know what mutton is?"

"I don't," Jimmy says.

"Do you want to know?" she asks.

"I don't."

"Do you like mutton? I do."

"How can you like it if you don't know what it is?" Polly asks angrily. "You must ask me or Mummy, and we shall always answer your questions."

"I won't," Jimmy says.

"But you must," says Polly. "You're a big boy now. Now, listen and try to remember:

Mutton is the flesh of the sheep;

Veal is the flesh of the calf;

Beef is the flesh of the cow.

Now tell me, what do we call the flesh of the pig?"

"I don't know," Jimmy says.

"We call it pork," his sister says.

"I like candy," Jim says.

"What else do you like?" Polly asks.

"Gooseberry jam, cakes, and chocolate," he says.

"Do you like books?"

"No, I don't."

"Do you like to sleep?"

"Yes, I do."

"Do you like to work?" Polly asks slyly.

"No, I don't," her little brother says.

"Then you are a lazy, greedy little pig," Polly says. "That's what you are!"
