Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, the novel became one of the most important kinds of writing in English literature. The most famous novelist of that time was Henry Fielding.

Henry Fielding was born in Sharpham, Somerset. When he was 20 years old, he moved to London and became a professional writer. At first, Fielding wrote plays, especially comedies, and for some years he was one of the most popular playwrights in the city. His best plays were often sharp and clever, making fun of the English ruling classes and the government. In 1737, his plays were banned from theaters because they criticized government officials.

In 1742, Fielding published his first novel, “The Adventures of Joseph Andrews.” Seven years later, in 1749, he wrote his greatest novel, “The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling.” In this book, Fielding sends his hero on a journey across England. On this journey, Tom Jones meets many different people from all parts of English society. This way, Fielding shows a lively picture of life, manners, and society in those days. The novel is full of clever criticism and is still considered one of the best novels in English literature.

Fielding hated hypocrisy, cruelty, and meanness. Few English writers, even after Shakespeare, understood human nature as well as he did. He believed in the good nature of people and in their ability to change both themselves and the world. Fielding was also a master of irony and humor, which he used in his writing to teach lessons and entertain readers at the same time.
