Native Americans have lived in the Americas for thousands of years, though scientists are not exactly sure how long. Early humans first lived in Asia and gradually moved east. Some may have crossed into North America over a land bridge that once connected Siberia and Alaska, while others may have traveled by small boats.

By the time Europeans arrived over 450 years ago, Native Americans had established communities across the continent and developed diverse ways of living. Europeans mistakenly called them "Indians," thinking they had reached the Indies, islands far to the east.

There were many different tribes, each with its own culture, language, and traditions. A tribe is a group of families who share ancestry and live together. Often, tribes did not have names for themselves, but they had names for neighboring tribes, which are still used today.

Native Americans adapted to their environments in remarkable ways. Forest-dwelling tribes knew how to find food, make fire, cook, and craft tools from stone. They hunted deer and other animals using spears, bows and arrows, and traps. Coastal and Plains tribes developed their own skills, such as sending messages with smoke signals or running long distances quickly. Their clothing, often made from deerskin, was so well designed that settlers adopted it.

Although Native Americans did not have a written alphabet at first, some, like Sequoyah, created one for their languages to preserve their knowledge and culture. Europeans often traded goods like furs with Native Americans and taught them new skills, including the use of firearms. However, as settlers expanded, they claimed Native lands for farming and cities. Conflicts arose, and despite the courage of Native communities, Europeans had greater numbers and advanced weaponry. Many animals, including buffaloes, were hunted to near extinction, affecting tribes who depended on them for food.

Despite these challenges, Native Americans shared valuable knowledge about living sustainably in their lands. Their skills, traditions, and innovations continue to be a vital part of the history and culture of the Americas.
