Herman Titov went to the United States in April 1962 for the session of the Committee on Space Research and he spent almost two weeks there. That was the second time he saw America.
“The first time I saw your country from cosmic altitudes on August 6, 1961, when I traveled on board the “Vostok-2”. Through the porthole I took a good look at the lights of New York, Washington and San Francisco,” said Herman Titov to the American reporters.
The day following Titov's arrival in the U.S.A. the Soviet Embassy in Washington began to get a lot of letters from various states, all of them addressed to Major Titov.
A film worker from New York said in his letter that Titov’s visit to America was an honor for the United States. A letter from farmers in the state Michigan said: “We have met you only over the radio and television, but we have been greatly impressed, and we can now appreciate how proud your country and your people are of you. We are very sorry not to be able to shake you by the hand.”
But many Americans could do what the farmers from Michigan were not able to do.
Many people will remember a touching scene in one of the halls of the airport in Seattle. The hall was crowded with reporters, policemen and passengers who were waiting for Titov’s arrival. Suddenly a girl came through the crowd, and all the people in the hall made way for her — she was carrying a bunch of lilac.
“I have grown it in my own garden in Tacoma. I was so afraid to be late for your arrival, but now I’m here,” the girl said when Herman Titov took the flowers. “Now I am happy.” Then she added in Russian: «Добро пожаловать!»
