Part I

Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon, England, on the 25th of April, 1599. His family were rich landowners. His grandfather was a sheriff and a member of Parliament. His father, Robert Cromwell, had a small estate and also worked in Parliament. Oliver went to a Grammar School for his education.

When he was seventeen, Oliver entered Cambridge University. He studied mathematics and learned to speak and write Latin. He also read about Greek and Roman history. Oliver liked sports and played football very well. He got a good education for his future life.

At the age of twenty, Oliver married his wife. They worked on their farm and had eight children: four daughters and four sons. Oliver was a good father and taught his children at home.

Oliver Cromwell cared about fairness and wanted to help people in his town. When he was twenty-eight, the people of Huntingdon elected him to Parliament. This was the beginning of his public life.

At that time, King Charles I ruled England. He wanted to make decisions without Parliament. He needed money for wars, but Parliament refused to give it. The King took money from people and punished those who disagreed with him. Because of this, many people did not like the King. Oliver Cromwell worked in Parliament to help the people and supported important laws.

In 1642, a Civil War began between the King and Parliament. King Charles I had an army of 10,000 soldiers, and Parliament had 20,000. Oliver helped to organize the Parliamentary Army. He became a captain, then a colonel, and later a general. He taught soldiers to fight well and helped them in battles.

During the war, many battles happened in different parts of England. Cromwell helped Parliament win important victories. By 1646, the first part of the Civil War ended, and Parliament controlled most of the country. Oliver continued to work in Parliament and helped with important decisions.
