Alfred Coppard was an English writer. He was born in a small town in England in a very poor family. His father died when Alfred was only nine years old. There were four children in the family. Alfred’s mother worked long hours, but she got very little money, so the boy had to leave school and begin to work too.
Alfred liked to read and he read very many books. He knew the life of poor people and later he began to write short stories about them. His first short stories were published in 1916. “The Cherry-Tree” is one of Coppard's stories about children.
