Before the first Europeans came to North America, there were people living there who had their own cultures and traditions. The newcomers called them Native Americans.
The different Native American tribes were never united because life was different in different parts of the country. In the forests of the North-east, there were many animals and fish in the rivers. People there hunted and fished. They also grew corn for their food.
In the South, people grew tobacco, which was new to the Europeans. In the West, there were many buffalo. These animals gave meat and skins. From buffalo skins, people made clothes and covered their houses — the wigwams.
