Edinburgh is the old capital of Scotland and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is built on seven hills and goes down to the bay called the Firth of Forth.
From the streets in the city center, you can see ships coming to Edinburgh from different countries. The highest hill is called “King Arthur’s Chair” and is 300 meters above sea level. In the “Old Town,” narrow houses with small windows climb up narrow streets towards Edinburgh Castle. This castle on Castle Rock, 150 meters high, is about one thousand years old.
The modern town is in the valley. The streets are straight and well-planned, so it is easy to walk around. Scots say that Saint Petersburg and Edinburgh are the only cities with such a beautiful layout. The main street, Princess Street, is one mile long and has beautiful houses and a monument to Walter Scott. A new bridge over the river Forth was opened in 1966. It is the fourth of its kind in the world.
