Interesting Facts about Natural Elements

star 4

It’s Interesting To Know that gold can be pounded very thin, so that the height of 280,000 sheets of gold, put one on the top of the other, will be not more than one inch. You can get an idea of how thin this is when you realize that a thousand sheets of the thinnest paper will be an inch thick.

... that diamonds are the hardest substance known to us. Diamonds, are much harder than steel or any other metal. The only thing which can scratch a diamond is another diamond—no other substance is hard enough.

... that salt consists of two poisons. Salt is made up of the metal, sodium, and the gas, chlorine. Both of these are poisons. But when they are chemically combined, you can eat them safely.

... that helium was discovered on the sun before it was found on earth. In 1868, by a careful analysis of the sun’s rays, scientists concluded that a chemical element, unknown on the earth, must exist on the sun. They named this element, a gas, helium. Twenty-seven years later, helium was discovered on earth.

... that glass is a liquid. Though it is hard enough to be called a solid, glass is really a liquid. If a piece of glass is left standing in one position, the particles which make up the glass will float downward. Old windows are thicker at the bottom than at the top.

... that mercury is a dry liquid. Mercury is a metal but it is also a liquid. It runs like water and changes its shape according to the container in which it is placed. But it will not wet your fingers when you touch it!

... that water cannot put out some fires. Water is useless in putting out some kinds of fires—a fire of burning oil, for example. As oil is lighter than water, it floats on the surface of the water. That’s why sand, which can smother an oil fire, is much more useful than water in putting out a fire of burning oil.
