In 1883, an albatross flew 5,000 miles from Hog Island in the Indian Ocean to Freemantle, Australia, with a SOS appeal from the shipwrecked crew of the French ship “Tamaris”. On arriving, the bird fell to the beach lifeless. A collar made out of a tin can, on which the sailors had stamped their story, was found around the bird’s neck.
The Australian government cabled the story to Paris and a ship was immediately sent to help the sailors. It came too late. It could not find the sailors. They were never heard of again.
