Last Saturday afternoon Henry Brown and his father went to a football match. The Browns and many other people in their town believe that their team is the best in this part of England.
There were fifteen thousand people at the stadium. They came from many places because this match was the most important of the year. Everyone was very excited to see the game.
At three o’clock all the spectators saw the two teams on the field. The home team wore blue and white shirts, and the visitors’ team wore red and white shirts. Both teams looked ready and strong.
The referee started the match. For the first twenty minutes the home team played better, and the ball was mostly on the visitors’ side of the field. Then a player from the visitors’ team scored the first goal. Soon after this, the referee stopped the game because it was half-time. People went to drink water and talk about the first part of the game.
In the second half of the match, the home team played better again. They attacked all the time and scored a goal after ten minutes. After fifteen more minutes, they scored another goal. Then, just before the game ended, they scored a third goal and won the match. Everyone at the stadium was very happy and cheered loudly for the home team.
On the way home, Mr. Brown said, “Well, that was a good game. It was the best match we have seen this winter.”
“Yes, better than last week,” answered Henry.
“They have a good team, but our players won because they could run faster. Who are they playing next week?” asked Mr. Brown.
“Cardiff City, I think,” said Henry.
“Do you think they will win?”
“I don’t know, but Cardiff has a strong team this year,” said Henry’s father. “It will be an interesting game.”
Henry was very excited and could not wait to see the next match. He hoped their team would play as well as today and win again. It was a wonderful afternoon for both of them.
