New Year in England

In England, New Year is not celebrated as much as in some other countries. In the South of England, almost nobody celebrates New Year’s Day. People go to bed at the usual time on New Year’s Eve. But in the North of England and in Scotland, it is a big holiday.
How do English people celebrate the New Year?
Usually, there is a New Year party. It can be a family party or a party with friends. The party often starts at eight o’clock in the evening and finishes late at night.
Another popular way to celebrate is to go to a New Year’s dance. Many hotels and dance halls have a dance on New Year’s Eve. The hall is decorated, there is music, and everyone is happy.
The most famous celebration is in the center of London, where people gather and sing together.
On the 1st of January, New Year’s Day, people do not go to work. They send New Year postcards, and some people give small presents to each other.
